Texas Hold 'em: Basic Rules and Tactics

Texas Hold 'em is currently the most widely played Poker variation in the United States. Its variant, No Limit Hold 'em, is often a preferred medium in Pokier tournaments, including the World Series of Poker.

The basic rules of Texas Hold 'em is as follows: Each player is dealt two down cards ("hole cards" in Poker parlance). Five shared down cards are laid on the table. The first betting round takes place, after which three cards are turned up. Another betting, and another card is turned up (the Turn). After another betting, the final card is turned (the River).

The final bets precede the showing of hands. However this will not be necessary if only one player is left as a result of folding. In that case the player wins the pot.

The rules of No Limit Hold 'em are the same, except there are no restrictions in the wagers that players can put up. When attempting to re raise the amount must be at least the same as the previous one. Because of the high stakes, it is understandable why No Limit Hold 'em are tournament organizers and players' choice.

When playing Poker No Limit Hold 'em it is important to not just keep your eye on the hands, but also on your opponents. Poker is as much a mental game as it is analytical. By watching the other players you can gain certain advantages.

If your opponents are the timid types (they bet low and take few risks) try to be aggressive. Their reactions usually give away the hand they are holding. By calling or bluffing early, chances are they will fold. On the other hand, do not be intimidated if the other players call. If you have a descent hand, do not hesitate to match them.

Of course it is important to pay attention to your hands. In pre-flop, play with only strong hands, as in pairs (KK, QQ, JJ). If your hand is not good, and the pot is not yet worth the risk, then do not hesitate to fold.

The All in option allows for interesting strategies. Obviously if your hand is strong you should go for it. On the other hand, if you are feeling lucky, you can still go for it with less than a stellar hand, because there is a chance the others will fold.

Finally, know when to quit. You can get so caught up in the game, that you will not have realized you had been playing for hours. if you are on the game, keep going, but if your concentration is beginning to slip, it is best to quit now before your money slips away too.

The game play of Texas Hold 'em and No Limit Hold 'em in particular, lends itself naturally to strategy, tactics and thrills. While developing skills will take time, perseverance will pay off, and with continuous play you will find yourself able to compete with the best of them.
